Penguins in the Northern Lights

This lesson was a choice. All students needed to watch the lesson, but then had the option of whether they wanted to do it or not.
  • First we watched this  brief video on auroras... they were much more "into it" than I anticipated.
  • Then I reminded students what happens when salt is sprinkled on top of wet watercolor paint. We had been experimenting with watercolors in the painting center, so creating the background using watercolor and salt was a perfect tie in.
  • The next art class I did a brief demo on blending oil pastels. Students who wanted to continue with the lesson and create a penguin (or anything else using oil pastels quickly got to work.
