This tray of bisqueware (clay that has been fired once) has been glazed and must go into the kiln for a second firing. In the kiln, the glaze will melt and become a thin layer of colored glass that fuses to the clay and will act as a decorative and utilitarian surface on the clay.
Notice the glass globs on a few of the pieces. These small pieces of glass have been placed on top of the glaze and will also melt... creating an interesting crackling effect on top of the glaze.
This tray of greenware (clay that has been shaped but not fired yet) must be completely dry (otherwise known as "bonedry") before it can be fired. If fired too soon, moisture will cause pieces to explode.
Children are looking forward to fooling their grownups with this faux food! Shhh... don't tell.
